Ancón Hill

Waking up early to avoid the tropical heat, when hiking to the highest point of Panama City – Ancón Hill at 199m – felt like a good idea, until the military checkpoint positioned on Ancón Hill made us wait until 7:30.

If you ever plan on going to Ancón Hill, I strongly advice you to take an Uber to „Mi Pueblito“. That way you can avoid the checkpoint.

Due to the hill being quite undeveloped, it provides you the chance to spot a lot of wild life, without having to leave Panama City. Not to mention the beautiful view you get from the city and the Panama Canal.

Like the canal, Ancón Hill belonged to the US until 1977. It served as a base to administer the Panama Canal.

While we did see a lot of animals, we did not spot any sloths or toucans. Even though other tourists showed us pictures and told us where they saw some, we did not – it’s not like they could have gotten far in the meantime. So, if you bring a better pair of eyes than I did, you have a good chance of spotting sloths.
